“Elder in the Making” Premieres in Vancouver (Press Release)

CALGARY— After sell out premieres in Edmonton and Calgary, acclaimed Canadian film, “Elder in the Making” will make its Vancouver debut at 8 p.m. on March 4, 2015 at the York Theatre.

“Elder in the Making” is a story of two young urban dwellers, one a Blackfoot aboriginal named Cowboy Smithx, and the other a Chinese-Canadian newcomer named Chris Hsiung. Together they embark on a spiritual journey across the prairies through traditional Blackfoot territory.

“I grew up thinking there was no history or culture before the Europeans came and then I realized I was missing an important part of my own story as a Treaty 7 resident,” said
Hsiung, who is also the film’s Producer, Director and Editor.

Hsiung and Smithx will attend the Vancouver premiere, which is presented by the Vancouver Indigenous Media Arts Festival, to answer questions from the audience. “Elder in the Making” is a feature documentary inviting all residents of North America to explore the tragic and hopeful history of their home. Through the journey of two unlikely travel companions, this film uncovers our responsibility as stewards of the land and of the generations yet to come.

Guided by wisdom of modern day elders Hsiung and Smithx find the beginnings of the long road to reconciliation between indigenous and non-indigenous people. This is a contemporary film filled with humour, sadness, and insight

About Chris Hsiung:

Chris Hsiung is the founder of Hidden Story Productions. Hsiung seeks to create documentary stories which contribute to a collective narrative that is more compassionate, intelligent and just. In 2012, was selected to be an Artist-in-Residence in Calgary, where he produced the film “The Spirit of Sport.” His first international short documentary “Flood of Change” was selected for the Global Justice Film Festival 2013. Now, after two years of research, filming, and editing, Chris is debuting his first feature-length documentary “Elder in the Making.”

About Cowboy Smithx:

Cowboy Smithx is an Indigenous filmmaker of Blackfoot Ancestry from the Piikani and Kainai tribes of southern Alberta, Canada. Smithx was the youngest person to ever receive a Blackfoot Arts Award for his decades of work in the performing arts. Currently he’s working on a short doc called “Cree Code Talker” after successfully co-pitching it to BravoFACT. In addition to filmmaking, Smithx is an established music video Director and Producer, and the curator for Canada’s first international Indigenous speakers series: REDx Talks.
